Running sucks. Take it from me.
Thin people think it sucks too but they don’t have an ass like mine or twin double-D’s to control.
My name is Kristina Burkey and this is my book. It started as my blog when I was training for the Boston Marathon in 2011. It became a grown-up book after I had crossed that most prestigious of finish lines and wondered to myself, “Well, NOW what?”
You see, most people take a few years to build up to a marathon. Boston was my fourth race EVER inside of 2 years. I guess I jumped ahead. So I went back. And I did my first 5k a year later. Then a 10k. Then I tried to get faster so I wasn’t always looking at everyone’s back or being followed by a giant bus ordered to pick up the people who can’t finish.
Confessions of a Fat Marathoner is my journey through a lifetime of being overweight and my decision to change my fate. In these pages I run, I eat, I complain. I learn about running, I push my fat body past its comfort zone (WAY past). I remove the limitations I was only putting on myself, and I dig around to try and find the reason why I was hanging onto the weight. Now don’t get all excited. This isn’t one of those books. I’m still fat. Sometimes there’s more to a journey like mine than just getting “fat to fit.”
Also, if you think this is another piece of inspirational fluff, think again. Along with all my stories about the weird crap (and occasional wild animal) I see while I’m on training runs and the odd people I meet, I will randomly go off on subjects like, “Why don’t they make exercise clothes for fat people? Don’t we need them the most?” and “Why are you snooty salesgirls so rude to me? So what if you think I can’t fit in your clothes? Are you or are you not still getting your paycheck?” and the unfortunate practice of prejudice.
Plus, there is the deliciously cringe-worthy subject of the truth about running. Every smelly, sweaty, steaming, gory, squishy, burning detail. It’s all here. You’re welcome. So grab your favorite snack, find a fresh, un-used Port-o-Potty, strap in and read my adventures. They say a journey of 1,000 miles (or 26.2) starts with a single step.
Here’s mine.

I am a heavier runner and training for my first half marathon. I was interested in reading her perspective. I could relate to a lot of what she talks about. She is funny, which makes it easy to read. But, sometimes it felt a little like she was trying too hard to be entertaining and it came off a little condescending. She expects certain etiquette from others, yet, talks about taking half a vendors stock of freebies, yet hates when there is not much left when she finishes a race. So, I thought that was weird...or an example of trying too hard to be funny. But, over all I enjoyed it.

Confessions of a Fat Marathoner eBook Kristina Burkey Lynette Silva Lauren Day Sarah Krisinger Reviews
I LOVED this book! Rarely do I have to put a book down to wipe the tears from my eyes - as I was crying with laughter several times! Maybe I enjoyed it so much because I have recently started running (although I have NO desire to run a marathon) or the fact that like the author, I am considered "fat" by society's standards. Regardless, this book is both hilarious and inspiring and I would definitely recommend it.
I thought this was very inspiring. I've done several half marathons, but this has inspired me to go for the full marathon. It's very funny! Wish I lived in Boston to do a run with Burkey! Like a lot of late bloomers, I didn't start until my 30s. I find her down-to-earth every-girl style to be extremely like able! I'm definitely going to read it again and highly recommend this to any adult wanting to start running for any race.
I really enjoyed the book! She has a conversational tone that makes me feel like I'm sitting next to her and hearing her stories first-hand. I am also a big gal, just learning to run. I can totally relate with everything she says. Even if you aren't a runner, or you are a fat (or skinny) runner; this is a very entertaining read.
This book was such a disappointment. It started to lose me when the author stated that she didn't believe addictions were a medical condition, but as it devolved into a rant, I had to stop reading (right around "My Two Cents"). I love to run and believe than anyone, anywhere can run, but I don't think this book helps to promote that or a healthy attitude. Instead, it just reads as a series of blog posts. Which, if that is what it is, then I seriously want my money back.
Enjoyable book, though the author occasionally was a !little! !exuberant! !with! !her! !use! !of! !exclamation marks! Much of what she shared resonated with me--been there, experienced that, though not the hills...most of my runs are blissfully flat. 😁 In all, funny stories and anecdotes about the whole crazy running experience, but not a prize-winning narrative.
While I could have done without some of the more colorful language, this book was interesting even to a non-athletic person like me. I laughed many times at her experiences and admired her for her determination to train under all kinds of adverse circumstances. I was most amazed that with all that running she did, she couldn't seem to get her weight down. Hard to understand. The book was an easy read and I liked her conversational style of writing. I doubt if you will find many books about running written by someone who doesn't mind admitting she is overweight--5' 11" and 246 pounds. Good for her for being honest and having a sense of humor about herself.
My friend Amanda recommended this, telling me how hilarious it was. I am not a marathoner (I shudder at anything more than 6 miles) and Kristina does a great job at giving a first-time marathoner's perspective, is open about the challenges of first-marathon training, yells and screams, laughs, curses, and says all the things that make you realize that she is a real [and hilarious] person. I feel like Kristina and I are sitting in a coffee shop and she's telling me this story, first-person, waving her hands around and laughing the whole time (except when she's frowning or complaining about something ridiculous). After reading about her training I thought, "Hey, I might want to do a marathon!", though haven't decided yet. Great job Kristina! Pick this one up if you want a motivating and funny companion while you lay on the couch wondering if you can run more than 6 miles too )
